The Financial Market

So I heard something today that I thought was pretty cool. A friend of mine has been having a hard time with their student loans. With the economy the way that it's been, he just can't afford to make the monthly payments. So, obviously, Sallie Mae has been calling him and asking about what the problem is. Finally he decided to face the problem and he told them his situation. Rather than say "Tough you still have to pay," they LOWERED his interest rate to 1%, reduced his payments to $100.00 a month for 12 months, and waived the late fees for lack of payment. Better yet they didn't put his loan in default. Even more, if he pays the $100.00 consistently for 3 months, he gets an additional 5 months of $100.00 and 1% interest. My student loans are not even that good!

Maybe the hoopin' and hollerin' the past few months or so is starting to make changes in our financial practices...

the humilty of great friends

So today I was eating my lunch in front of my computer like always, when I read this really awesome email from my roommate. It was a forward she had received from her friend but she added this really sweet message before it and sent it to 12 of her girlfriends like most forwards ask you to do. I was really grateful for her because she allowed the time to stop to pause to think and pray about the people in my life. I know that we're supposed to that anyway, but today it hit me a little differently. It's still so humbling that we spend our lives working and trying to leave our footprint behind. When really...the footprint is not in our actions, but in the hearts and lives of others. I don't know...it just kind of put things back into perspective for me :-) So, if you have a friend you haven't talked to in awhile or if you're thinking of someone just call them to tell them you're thinking of them. You never know how much that small action will change their day and attitude.

Basically this guy started a blog with the sole purpose of making money from it. And now it is his full time job making over $1000 a day in 2006. He writes blog posts that anyone and everyone might be interested in reading, mostly how-to's and such like "how-to train yourself to be an early bird".

The money comes from ads placed on the site and when people click them, he gets paid for it.

I set up some ads for my blog but I get far too little traffic to even make a penny so I am thinking of making a how-to blog and do write-ups (with photos) on the little (how-to) things I do every day.

Setting up the ads is more complicated than I thought but it seems there are also companies out there that will help you and take a cut of the profit. A big problem that ive encountered so far with the ads on my blog is that my competitors ads are showing up on my site, not cool! If your site gets enough traffic though you can target companies that might want to advertise on your blog, say like kitchen gadget ads for a cooking blog.

Anyways, I am still learning about this as there is a lot to learn.

FIFTY EIGHT YEARS

BETTY AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED 58 YEARS TODAY. We got marred on Betty's mother and fathers wedding anniversary. If they were living, they would have been married 80 years today.

They both were wonderful people. We talk about them often.

What does this have to do with learning. Well one thing to learn when you are married, is to NEVER GO TO BED MAD. Take it upon your self to make up. That way, the mad will not remain over until the next day.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

I started reading this book called Rich Dad Poor Dad and it's about lessons a man learned about financial literacy from his friend's dad and his own dad. So far, I've learned a couple things:

1. We generally make financial decisions based on emotions such as fear and desire. At first glance you don't think this is true, but he says thats generally how people get stuck in the "rat race"

2. Rich people don't work for money. Rich people has money work for them.

3. Rich people always have their assets outweigh their liabilities and expenses

Sounds like simple little lessons, but learning to apply them and become more mature in my financial responsibility is the real test. I haven't finished the book, but I'll keep you posted on what else I learn :-)
